FORMER Celtic striker Chris Sutton believes that his old club don't have what it takes to succeed in European football this season - because of a lack of investment in the first team squad.

In an interview with TheSportsman ahead of tonight's Europa League play-off against AIK Stockholm, Sutton admitted that he believes it will be a 'tall order' for Celtic to compete in the knockout stages of the Europa League.

When asked if Celtic can find success in Europe this season, Sutton responded: "No, not at the minute.

"If I’m being honest, unless there’s investment then let's just wait until the end of August then maybe I'll have a better answer. It’s very difficult considering their financial situation.

"But look what happened last season with Ajax in the Champions League. I’d like nothing more than to see Celtic relive what happened in 2003, but it looks a tall order. I don’t know whether they have some of the star quality we had.

"First things first, they need to get into the competition because they have to play AIK. Secondly, they’d have to perform in the group. Then in the knockouts you’d get the Champions League clubs who have fallen out.

"It looks like a tall order for Celtic to compete at that level but stranger things have happened. They’ve really got to up their level.

"We’ve seen Celtic lose to Malmo in a Champions League qualifier, so it’s not impossible that they could lose to AIK. Getting through to the Europa League group stage is the bare minimum of what’s expected of them."
