STEVEN GERRARD has called on Ibrox to roar Rangers into the Europa League after a goalless draw in their play-off round first leg with Legia Warsaw.

The Light Blues recorded another impressive result on the continent as they more than held their own in Poland and are now just 90 minutes away from a place in the group stages for the second consecutive season.

Legia were backed by a sell-out crowd of 31,000 at the Polish Army Stadium but were left frustrated as Rangers produced another solid performance to leave them with a real chance of qualification next Thursday night.

Rangers had to battle their way to a draw in Ufa 12 months ago as Gerrard’s side dug deep following the red cards shown to Alfredo Morelos and Jon Flanagan.

And the 39-year-old is determined to finish the job on home soil as Rangers target another Euro victory that will take them through a fourth qualifying round this term

Gerrard said: “Being at home at Ibrox with a full house, the atmosphere changes in our favour. Hopefully it gives us an advantage to be a bit more brave in final third and create more chances.

“To be honest, it changes from year to year. last year’s situation was different. We had to go to Russia and play on a plastic pitch and we lost two men during the game.

“We had to defend our goal and hang in there and get over the line in a different way. I hope we don’t have to play the next 90 minutes with 10 or nine men.

“All I ask of the players is back yourselves and be brave. Go and empty it next week. What’s important is that we have four sides of the ground right us with us from start to finish.

“With the crowd and the experience we have in the team, that could be crucial, especially towards the end of game.

“We are very much looking forward to it. It’s going to be tough. I predicted it will go to the wire but now the focus turns to the league and trying to get three important point at the weekend.

“Then we start preparations for the second leg. We will be ready, we will be up for it and we will give it our best shot.”

The raucous Legia fans ensured this first leg was quite an occasion in the Polish capital but there were no goals for the home crowd or the 1,000 travelling Gers supporters to cheer.

Sheyi Ojo and Nikola Katic came close with headers in either half, while the Light Blues’ best chance fell to Alfredo Morelos as he was denied by keeper Radoslaw Majecki after being sent clear by Scott Arfield.

That was as close as Rangers would come to what would have been a priceless away goal and Gerrard was disappointed Morelos couldn’t mark his 100th appearance for his side in the perfect manner.

He said: “I think in the first 45 minutes we were excellent. We really stood up to the atmosphere here and the intensity and the speed Legia wanted to play.

“I was really proud of the team. We controlled a lot of the game. Certainly in the back and middle phase, we were really good and had a lot of control.

“I would have liked us to be a bit more positive and create a bit more in the final third but I came in at half -time very satisfied. In the second half, we did OK, but up until the Alfredo chance, I don't think we created enough.

“We had a set piece with Niko where he hits the top of the net, but the big chance of the night came to Alfredo. Normally that’s a chance that he thrives on and gets us that crucial away goal.

“It wasn’t to be so we have to accept the 0-0. Considering there were no goals, both teams played a really entertaining game.

“It was frantic, the tempo was really high and the atmosphere was fantastic. It was all in Legia’s favour. Now it swings in our favour. We have 90 minutes to get the job done.

“I always thought it was a game that would be tight and that’s been proved over the last 90 minutes.”
