ALFREDO MORELOS made his 100th appearance for Rangers in the draw with Legia Warsaw. Unfortunately, he couldn’t celebrate the landmark with a goal in Poland.

He will be disappointed to miss the chance that he had in the second half and that was the best opening that Steven Gerrard’s side created.

But the good thing about Alfredo is that he always comes back for more and he will be there ready to have another go should the chance arise at Ibrox next week.

His double against Midjytlland last week saw him become one of only eleven players to score more than ten goals in European competition for Rangers.

Unfortunately, I miss out on that particular list. I did play most of my games in Europe in midfield or at centre-half right enough!

I know some of Alfredo’s goals haven’t come against the best of opposition but you still need to put the ball in the back of the net and he should be proud of his overall scoring record for Rangers.

For me, there is no doubt that the competition with Jermain Defoe has taken Alfredo up a level this season because he now knows that he is no longer all-but guaranteed to start.

Last season, he would have felt he would always get the No.9 shirt but now Jermain is proving that he can score goals as well and what a strike force that is for the manager to choose from. The two of them are spurring each other on.

It is very rare that you will get the two of them playing together because that will force the manager to change the structure of the side. Whoever is on the park, you fancy them to score, though.

This could be a terrific season for Alfredo and with the help of the manager, the staff and the players he could have an even more prolific campaign than he did last term.

There have been times in Alfredo’s Rangers career when he has looked a bit sullen, a bit grumpy. But in recent weeks you have seen him play with a smile on his face and he seems to really be enjoying his football right now and his attitude looks to be spot on.

Hopefully he can play his part in a really successful season for Rangers.

The players in the dressing room, and the manager of course, were not happy with him on several occasions last season but I think the lessons from those experiences are finally getting through. If he is fouled now, he gets up and he gets on with it.

Everyone at the club will help him as much as they can, but Alfredo had to help himself and he deserves credit for the way he has hit the ground running and the impact he has made this season.

He is a good player and good players always get kicked. If the opposition don’t see you as a threat and don’t care about you, then you aren’t up to much as a striker.

It is a compliment that teams target Alfredo because it shows that they are scared of him. When you see the form he is in, it is no wonder that they have that fear factor.

Alfredo had to show people that he can behave himself and that he is maturing as a player and the way he has played in the first few weeks of the season has been very impressive.

When you look at his game and his ability, that disciplinary record was the only black mark against him last term and I am sure he will have learned a lot from those tough times.

We all know that Alfredo wants to move on from Rangers one day and play in a bigger league. If he can score 30 goals again this season, and continue to perform in Europe, then that will raise the calibre of the clubs that will be interested in him.
