Former Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha always named his starting XI on a Monday, according to Clint Hill.

Portuguese coach Caixinha took charge of the Ibrox outfit in 2017 where Hill was already a favourite after signing when Mark Warburton was in charge.

The ex-defender watched his then-leader struggle in the role and find it tough to adapt and get his ideas across to the players.

But some of his methods had Hill questioning his suitability for the job at Ibrox - including his decision to name his team on the Monday before games.

Hill, speaking to The Athletic, said: "When he arrived, it wasn’t his team. He tried to make it do the things he wanted but I don’t think he was very clear on how he described those things or how he wanted to play.

"I just wasn’t sure it was going to suit here. I think he got lost in that realisation that this is Rangers, it needs to be 100 percent and ready for everything.

"At first it was a totally new way of training and explaining things.

"I look back at the training now and there were loads of good things but it was twenty minutes of something here and then another twenty minutes of something else there.

"I couldn’t get my head around going out for half an hour, going back in for two hours and then coming back out.

"It’s fine as long as it is quality but if you’re sitting around for a long time it’s going to wind people up.

"He used to pick the team early too.

"So on a Monday you’d know who was starting but then there are twelve other players who have seen that and then need to train knowing someone needs to get injured for them to to play."

Hill is ready to take in this weekend's first Glasgow derby of the season this weekend.

And he believes, if Steven Gerrard's men can get off to a good start, they could go all the way.

He added: "[Gerrard] is doing good things up there. The board have backed him and he’s brought in some really good players.

"They way they’re progressing and starting to challenge I think they’ve got a great chance of winning the league.

"I think this might be the year."
