Mark Allen said goodbye to Rangers this week after two years at the club.

The director of football at Ibrox cited family reasons for his decision to leave and he was thanked by the club and manager Steven Gerrard for his valuable assistance in their transfer policy.

Allen, in total, brought in 34 players to Gers - to differing levels of success.

Of course the Welshman, brought in from Manchester City, had to help overhaul a squad made up of flops like Carlos Pena, Eduardo Herrera and Dalcio.

But it wasn't all roses in terms of the personnel Allen brought to Ibrox himself.

Here we're taking a look at the five best signings made by Mark Allen as he walks off into the sunset.

And the five worst.

WORST

5. Aaron Nemane

If I'm honest with this one, I had to look this lad up before adding him to our list.

Rangers fans react to Mark Allen departure as Ibrox director leaves after two years at club

Which, in itself, justifies his spot.

Winger Nemane joined on loan from Allen's former employers Man City but failed to make any sort of impact whatsoever during his time in Glasgow.

Still a youngster at 19 when he joined, he made six appearances from the bench for the Gers.

The reason he's not higher on the list is that it was a loan deal and, presumably, not a massive financial burden.

4. Ovie Ejaria

Gerrard had watched the youngster during his time with Liverpool's academy side, so the loan move was sanctioned by Mark Allen.

Things looked well at the beginning, with Ejaria being tipped to go on and build a strong rapport with the supporters and make the midfield position his own.

But things took a turn for the worst when the 21-year-old revealed he had failed to adapt to life in the Glasgow goldfish bowl.

He found it very tough and decided to quit Rangers and return to Liverpool early.

His manager Gerrard told at the time how he made the wrong decision to do so, and he's now on another loan with Reading.

He played 28 times for Gers, scoring twice.

3. Eros Grezda

Albanian Grezda is an international player with 13 caps.

So you could be forgiven for thinking at the time that Gers had unearthed a gem.

The playmaker apparently struggled to settle in his new surroundings and his form was poor on the pitch whenever he did get the nod to start - which wasn't all that often.

Rangers did not push panic button to sign Ryan Kent in reaction to Celtic defeat, claims Mark Allen

Seven starts and ten appearances from the bench not exactly a positive and he only managed two goals.

The Ibrox club have been trying to offload him for a while now, but he failed to land a move before deadline day.

2. Kyle Lafferty

Then-Hearts star Lafferty was one of the players Rangers were desperate to sign.

A will-he-won't-he speculative period took over before the Northern Irishman eventually did sign.

Some expectation, it must be said, will have been on Lafferty's head after a trophy laden first spell as a Ranger.

However he failed to live up to what Allen and Gerrard wanted from him.

Apparently not a good trainer, either, this time round, Lafferty was eventually shipped out after 30 appearances (22 from the bench) and just six goals.

Glasgow Times: Sadiq will go down as a serious flopSadiq will go down as a serious flop

1. Umar Sadiq

He'll always be known for THAT dive against Aberdeen when he should instead have tapped in to score.

A massive disappointment for most Rangers fans.

Signed on loan from AS Roma, expectation was high for this lad too, but he never even got close to justifying his deal.

He failed to score in his first five matches and decided to take a fall against the Dons instead of score - summing up his entire Gers career.

Steven Gerrard lost patience with him and he was allowed to leave before his deal was scheduled to come to an end.

BEST

5. Jermain Defoe

Veteran frontman Defoe joined on loan from Bournemouth and instantly became a fan's favourite.

His goal scoring reputation certainly preceded him.

One thing he's consistently managed at Ibrox as well, though, is goals.

He's notched 14 in 30 games and continues to push Alfredo Morelos all the way as the pair fight it out for a starting berth.

4. Nikola Katic

Steven Gerrard has already suggested that the Croatian defender is the first player he looks to when picking his back-four.

The manager revealed earlier this season, in fact, that £3m signing Filip Helander is being kept out of the starting XI because of Katic's form.

The centre-half wasn't exactly a known quantity when he joined from Slaven on an undisclosed fee, but he's certainly a favourite now.

He even chips in with his fair share of goals for a defender, bagging himself four including a big one against FC Midtjylland in this season's Europa League qualifiers.

3. Scott Arfield

Canadian Arfield was one of the first real statement signings at Ibrox under Allen and Gerrard.

A star at Burnley in the English Premier League, Arfield didn't take long to endear himself to the Ibrox faithful.

Moving to his preferred number ten role has allowed the creativity to flow from him and he's chipped in with plenty of goals, including a vital second as Rangers beat Celtic back in May.

He also joined on a free transfer, proving to be one of the bargains of Allen's tenure.

Glasgow Times: Ryan Kent signed for £7m after a successful loan stintRyan Kent signed for £7m after a successful loan stint

2. Ryan Kent

What a loan signing he turned out to be.

Young Player of the Year in his first term at the club, Kent became an instant hit.

Six goals and six assists in 43 appearances may not seem as significant as it was, but Steven Gerrard desperately wanted the winger back in his squad for this campaign.

A youngster, 22, still more than willing to take defenders on, Kent was a valuable asset to the Light Blues last year.

As we know the playmaker is back at Rangers having become their second most expensive signing ever - a deal which rounded off Allen's participation in incomings perfectly.

Of course, he's yet to justify the hefty £7million price tag.

But no matter what happens, Rangers fans have fallen in love with Kent and Allen had a big hand in bringing him to Glasgow in the first place.

1. Allan McGregor

I did struggle to decide between who'd be numbers one and two, here.

Kent is a proven talent and will do well to emulate last season's success.

Scotland goalkeeper McGregor, though, has never been questioned.

A pillar of comfort, if you like, at Rangers because of his consistency. Gers' defenders know they've got a brilliant stopper behind them, which breeds confidence.

He kept 15 Premiership clean sheets last season as well as seven in the Europa League including qualifiers.

McGregor has continued his form into this season, already managing six clean sheets in ten games from all competitions.

And another freebie.
