Ayr boss Ian McCall reckons Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos is the best striker in the country.

Colombian Morelos has already notched 11 goals in just 13 games and has been at the centre of transfer interest from around Europe in recent windows.

With Celtic star Odsonne Edouard also plying his trade in the Scottish Premiership, the debate has raged on recently to decide which player is the better attacker.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard could throw Jamie Murphy back into first-team fold through injury necessity

Now McCall has weighed in on the discussion and he claims that El Buffalo is the player he'd have on his front line.

He told BBC Sportsound: “I would just touch down Morelos just now.

“I think Morelos, if he can just curb himself, he looks as if he can score all types of goals.

“They are all good strikers but right now I would take Morelos.”

Celtic’s Edouard - after his recent goal against Rangers at Ibrox - won Premiership player of the month for August.

However, when pushed, McCall added that neither he nor Morelos are in the same league as Gers veteran Jermain Defoe.

He added: “If you take Jermain Defoe and take seven or eight years off him then it is a no-brainer.

“He is well ahead of them. His achievements are miles ahead of them.”
