FILIP HELANDER is confident he can put a frustrating start to his Rangers career behind him and establish himself at Ibrox.

The defender was given a start against Feyenoord on Thursday night as he partnered Connor Goldson at the heart of the Gers’ backline.

And he reckons an impressive performance was a sign of things to come from him this term.

Helander said: “I knew it was going to be a battle when I came here. As a new player people are always going to judge how you do.

“It is important you just try to do the things you have been told to do and the things you are good at.

“The team has been playing well so it is always difficult to just come in and play regularly.

“The guys who have had the shirt have been doing really well.

“I was prepared not to start straight away. It is difficult coming to a new club but it does take time.

“It is frustrating but I am quite patient. I’m now hoping to play more often. I want to play every game. I’ve never been worried. I knew I would start for the national team as [Victor] Lindelof was coming back and so was our captain. I just tried to do as well as I could in training and waited for my chance.”

Rangers dedicated the win over Feyenoord to Ibrox hero Fernando Ricksen. It was an emotional but ultimately successful night.

Helander said: “It was probably the best atmosphere I have ever experienced as a player.

“We got the victory as well so that made it the perfect night. I was a little nervous beforehand although that is normal before every game.

“It will be the same if we were playing St Johnstone or Feyenoord.

“Before the game we got such a lift from the crowd. During it we got a lot of energy from them. Even the biggest teams will have problems if you put them under pressure.”
