The player, 30, explained how both Glasgow clubs were sniffing around him along with a host of other teams.

Speaking to Dutch publication De Gelderlander, Buttner revealed: "There was a lot of interest this summer.

"Vitesse wanted to keep me and there was a three-year deal on offer, but we couldn't figure it out.

"Besiktas then put in a concrete offer but that fell through.

"Fenerbahce, PAOK, Apoel Nicosia and Celtic were all interested.

"This week Rangers and Stoke City became interested.

"But the decision had already been made. Revolution it is."

Buttner made 13 appearances for United under manager Sir Alex Ferguson who signed him in 2012.

He also counts Dinamo Moscow and Anderlecht among his former clubs.
