DAVID MARSHALL: Quieter than he might have expected in opening 40 minutes before Golovin brought the first save from him, diving to his left to parry clear. Had no chance with any of the Russian goals. 6

LIAM PALMER: Played very narrow at times, but the Sheffield Wednesday full-back gave a far better showing than in his only previous cap in Kazakhstan. Tried to get forward more in second half. 5

MICHAEL DEVLIN: Given a debut at the heart of defence and had one or two nervy moments early on, but settled down and scrapped away as the Scots got deeper towards half-time. Looked spooked by Russian onslaught at start of second half though and could offer little to stem the tide. 5

CHARLIE MULGREW: Played Dzubya well in first half, using his experience to lean into the big striker when he knew he couldn’t beat him in the air. Unfortunately was caught wrong side of his opponent early in the second period as he was outmuscled for Russia’s opener and then bullied again at the third. 5

ANDY ROBERTSON: Captain had hands full with Fernandes down his side, so was cautious, but played some nice early forward passes into the attackers and generally used the ball well in first half. Crossing wasn’t effective coming from such a deep position though. 5

JOHN FLECK: Another debutant, the Sheffield United man slotted into midfield in the absence of Scott McTominay. Buzzed around and made some crucial interventions, and showed nous when taking one for the team on Golovin to pick up a yellow. Can hold his head high. 6

CALLUM MCGREGOR: Tried to get on the ball and show a bit of composure in the middle of the park, but for all that he managed some nice touches, he was left chasing shadows for the most part by the excellent Golovin. 5

RYAN FRASER: The rare moments of quality on the ball from the Scots in attacking areas mostly came from the Bournemouth winger in first half, but was unable to unlock the Russian backline. Took a knock to the ankle and was replaced with 25 minutes to go. 5

JOHN MCGINN: In the thick of the action as always, putting himself in where it hurts and competing in the middle of the park, but for all of the energy expended by the Aston Villa man, he had little to no effect on the outcome. 5

ROBERT SNODGRASS: Blew a couple of great opportunities to play in first Burke and then Fraser on the break, and although he put in a real shift, will be disappointed he didn’t show the quality on the ball he is known for. 4

OLIVER BURKE: Given the thankless tasks of leading the line on his own. Was game enough but was guilty of not getting his head up on the few occasions he was able to run at the Russian backline with the ball. Took a hefty thud after landing awkwardly and replaced at the break. 4

SUBSTITUTES

LAWRENCE SHANKLAND: Dundee United man got the call at half-time to replace the injured Burke and had a couple of good early touches and layoffs as he settled down. Tireless running and decent hold-up play, can be happy with his display. 6

RYAN CHRISTIE: Came on for last 25 minutes and tried to press the Russians, but couldn’t get on the ball. 4

STUART ARMSTRONG: On in the closing stages but game as long gone. 3
