JOSE ENRIQUE reflected on an ‘amazing’ day at Ibrox after recovering from a brain tumour to represent Liverpool once again.

The Spaniard was part of the Reds’ Legends side that emerged as 3-2 winners over their Rangers counterparts on Saturday.

And it was a special occasion in more ways than one for Enrique as he lined up alongside the likes of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Dirk Kuyt for a side managed by Anfield great Ian Rush.

The left-back was diagnosed with a chordoma, a rare type of tumour that usually occurs in the bones of the skull base and spine, last year and went under the knife after losing sight in his left eye.

A long period of radiotherapy followed for the 33-year-old but he was fit enough to make it through 90 minutes once again as goals from Luis Enrique, Patrik Berger and Emile Heskey clinched victory for the Reds in front of an impressive crowd of Light Blues and Reds supporters.

The Rangers Charity Foundation and Liverpool Charity Foundation will both benefit from the match.

“A year ago I had a tumour in my head, I thought I was dying, and now I’m playing here in front of 30,000 people. I can be grateful and happy to be part of this,” Enrique the official Liverpool website. “It’s amazing. It has been a very difficult time, probably the most difficult time of my life.

“To [wear] this shirt again, it’s my club – I feel like this is my club – and to play 90 minutes again with this team is amazing.

“There were a lot of goals, all in the first half. It was really good, I really enjoyed [playing] 90 minutes.

“I don’t even remember the last time I played 90 minutes. I was really happy to see the guys and obviously to play again.

“When you are retired, to come here and play in front of the fans, you have memories and you enjoy it so much. I won’t forget this.”
