Rangers flop Joe Dodoo has hinted that Steven Gerrard was the wrong manager for him at Ibrox - as he revealed he doesn't feel he's taken a step down joining Bolton.

Dodoo, 24, had three loan spells away from Glasgow since he joined back in 2016 under Mark Warburton.

The striker didn't kick a ball in anger under Gerrard and opted to move south to join Wanderers earlier this summer.

Just six starts in his 27 appearances as a Rangers player in general, his record of five goals in all competitions wasn't enough to have him competing with the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe.

But he reckons his time at Rangers was not helped by the fact that he wasn't working with the right manager or at the right club for that period of his career.

Speaking to our sister paper The Bolton News, Dodoo said: "I think a lot of people forget the size of this club.

"Bolton are a big club and I don’t see this as any sort of step down. It’s easy to ignore what goes on behind closed doors but it’s my career and it’s not easy when you are not playing games, or you haven’t got the right manager or the right team.

"I’d rather be somewhere that I can achieve something with people who want to make me achieve, an environment that I benefit from.

"I feel like I have that here at Bolton. I have enjoyed what I have seen so far and I want more."
