Ryan Jack underlined why Rangers had been so keen for him to sign a new deal by netting a double against Ross County in Dingwall as his side romped to an emphatic 4-0 triumph.

Jack, who signed a two year contract extension that ties him to the Ibrox club until 2023 last week, scored twice in the first-half at the Global Energy Stadium.

The 27-year-old had only been on target once in the 2019/20 campaign before this evening – in the 4-0 triumph over St Joseph’s in a Europa League qualifier back in July.

With Alfredo Morelos also bagging a brace Steven Gerrard’s side won comfortably and remained level on points with Celtic at the top of the Ladbrokes Premiership. But they are now just one behind their city rivals on goal difference.

Gerrard made no fewer than five changes to his starting line-up – Allan McGregor, Steven Davis, Greg Stewart, Brandon Barker and Jermain Defoe all dropped out and Wes Foderingham, Jack, Glen Kamara, Sheyo Ojo and Morelos all came in.

The first goal came at the end of a well-worked attacking move in the 20th minute. Ojo played a one-two with Joe Aribo outside him on the left wing before driving forward into the County box and picking out Morelos at the far post. The Colombian striker had the simplest of tasks to net from close range.

Jack scored his first nine minutes later after getting on the end of a poor Liam Fontaine clearance. He took a touch and whipped a shot beyond Ross Laidlaw and into the bottom right corner.

The midfielder struck again eight minutes before half-time after good work by Aribo and Arfield. His second was a virtual carbon copy of his first and left Laidlaw with no chance.

Borna Barisic limped off in the 55th minute and was replaced at left back by Andy Halliday. Jack was replaced by Jamie Murphy in the 63rd minute.

Morelos bagged his second in the 71st minute. The Colombian slotted beyond Laidlaw from a tight angle after being supplied by Aribo to take his tally for the season to 18.
