I won a lot of medals and was spoiled as a Rangers player to be perfectly honest with you. I was so fortunate to play for the club and be successful with Rangers.

Three League titles, five Scottish Cups, five League Cups and a European medal. I was lucky during my era at Ibrox and those memories will always live with me.

That is what it is all about as a player. You want to look back when you retire and think about the big games, the wins, the celebrations and the good times with your team-mates and the supporters.

The majority of this Rangers squad don’t have that yet and that is why this season is so important for the club and for every member of Steven Gerrard’s side.

You get into football because you love the game. If you are lucky, you get to a high level and you earn money for doing something that you enjoy. But you want to win.

At some clubs, the chance to lift trophies just isn’t there but you get players that are quite happy making a career for themselves and earning good money being mid-table.

But when you come to Rangers, winning is what we are all about. You are here to win leagues and to win cups and that is what you need to do at Ibrox.

When you hang up your boots and people ask you ‘did you ever win anything in football?’ You don’t want to say ‘I played for a couple of clubs but I won nothing.’

You always want something to look back on and medals are what gets the blood pumping and what means most to you. That is the chance Rangers have this season.

The reason that Steven Gerrard is here is to be successful and at Rangers that means winning leagues and winning cups. That is what the club has been built on for nearly 150 years but we haven’t had it for a while.

The Betfred Cup is the first opportunity this season but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We need to beat Hearts first and then we can start thinking about finals and winning things.

The good thing is that Rangers are going into the game in good form after the draw in Porto and league wins against Motherwell and Ross County and one of the pleasing things for me on Wednesday night was how the team started the game.

You start as you mean to go on. If you are sloppy, it is very hard to pick it up. But if you are at it from the start, you have a chance of winning well and that is exactly what they did in Dingwall.

Time will tell how important that proves to be in the Premiership title race but it is the cup that is the priority this weekend and Steven knows better than most what it would mean to lift a bit of silverware this season. You don’t need to tell him how important it would be.

You can be a great guy, play nice football and bring some big nights like we have had in the Europa League. But at Rangers it is all about winning trophies and this is the first opportunity we have got to get to a final this season.

Not that many of the players have been successful at the clubs they have been at before in terms of winning medals so they know how much it would mean to themselves and the supporters to win a cup or the league this season. At Rangers, you have to win.

Yes, there has been improvement since Steven was appointed and there is no doubt that the club is in a better place these days. The supporters are happier and there are improvements on and off the park but Rangers won’t be back where they belong until they are winning titles and trophies on a regular basis.

The chance to get to a final is huge for Rangers but don’t think that because they are strong favourites and in form that it will be an easy game for Steven and the players on Sunday.

Rangers’ record at Hampden recently isn’t good enough and that goes back to the Scottish Cup final defeat to Hibernian a couple of years ago. That won’t come into the reckoning, though.

There will be a full house, the majority of which will be Rangers fans, and if that doesn’t get you going as a player then nothing will.

This is a huge game for Rangers on Sunday. And it is a chance Steven and his players need to make the most of.
