10 Premiership bargains that clubs could approach in January

When the transfer window reopens in January, clubs in the top flight will be on the lookout for potential signings as they look to strengthen their squads for the remainder of the campaign.

And while we can expect plenty of wheeling and dealing, some teams will undoubtedly have one eye on their squad for the 2020/21 season.

Players whose contracts expire at the end of the season can be approached when their current deal enters its final six months, as will be the case when January rolls around.

So, with that in mind, we've identified 10 potential Bosman signings that Premiership clubs can approach in the new year. The likes of Scott Sinclair, Allan McGregor or Steven Davis - all of whom are on deals which will expire in the summer - might be out of the financial reach of the majority of Scotland's clubs, but there are potential bargains to be found throughout the top flight.

Craig Gordon - Celtic

The former Hearts and Sunderland goalie came back to Scotland as he recovered from a terrible injury that disrupted years of his career. Gordon was given the opportunity to rebuild his career at Parkhead and grasped it but has since fallen down the pecking order at Celtic.

With Fraser Forster and Scott Bain ahead of him in the queue, Gordon looks set to leave Celtic in the summer after joining the club in 2014 and certainly still has enough about him that he would be an asset to most Premiership clubs.

Stephen O'Donnell - Kilmarnock

The Kilmarnock right-back was a crucial cog in Steve Clarke's successful side and has gone on to become a regular in the international set-up over the last 18 months.

O'Donnell has said that he will not make a final decision on his future until the end of the season and has not ruled out extending his stay in Ayrshire, but the 27-year-old will surely not be short of admirers and would provide an excellent addition to most top-flight teams.

Vaclav Hladky - St Mirren

The Czech goalkeeper has been nothing short of a revelation since joining St Mirren last January and it is no overstatement to suggest that the Paisley club could have been relegated if he hadn't been snapped up.

Jim Goodwin has already resigned himself to losing the shot-stopper at the end of the season and with Rangers said to be keeping tabs on the 28-year-old, there could be stiff competition for the goalie's signature.

Gary Dicker - Kilmarnock

Another Killie player who excelled under Clarke, Dicker has formed a formidable partnership with Alan Power in the heart of Kilmarnock's midfield. The Irish centre-mid signed a two-year extension in April 2018 but his current deal will expire at the end of the season.

At 33 years old, age is catching up on Dicker but he has shown over the last two years that he has still plenty to offer in the Premiership. For teams on the lookout for an experienced head in the middle of the park, there are few better options available on a free transfer.

Steven Lawless - Livingston

The tricky winger was rewarded for a fine campaign for Livingston in his first year at the club with a one-year extension at the summer and given his form since, Gary Holt will surely be keen to tie down the 28-year-old on a longer contract once again.

The former Partick Thistle winger has five goals and two assists to his name in the league so far this season and has shown his versatility under Holt; in the last 18 months, Lawless has featured on either flank as a winger and a wing-back. An established Premiership player during his time with the Jags and the Lions, Lawless could be the perfect signing for a time looking to add more creativity in the final third.

Matty Kennedy - St Johnstone

Another tricky winger who provides much of the attacking impetus for his side, Kennedy signed for the Saints in 2018 and has been a consistent performer in Tommy Wright's side.

No Premiership player attempts nearly as many dribbles per game as the 25-year-old and now that he is approaching the peak of his career, the former Everton man is certainly worth taking a punt on.

Mark Gillespie - Motherwell

Gillespie has been in superb form for Stephen Robinson's side this season and has the third-most saves in the top flight this season.

The 27-year-old is reportedly weighing up his options but is hopeful of a new deal at Fir Park, previously admitting that he loves it at Motherwell. But if a deal can't be worked out, Gillespie would provide a fine addition to just about every team in the division.

Jonny Hayes - Celtic

The Irish winger has become something of a utility man in recent years at Celtic and Neil Lennon is clearly a fan of the former Aberdeen player.

But at the age of 32, Hayes may want one last crack at regular first-team football and while any move for him from a Premiership side would be ambitious, he would be an excellent addition out wide. It could prove difficult to prise him away from Celtic but if he could be tempted, Hayes has plenty to offer.

Richard Tait - Motherwell

It wasn't all that long ago that Tait was being touted for a Scotland call-up and the full-back has been remarkably consistent over the last season or two at Motherwell.

Comfortable on either flank, Robinson will surely be keen to extend Tait's stay in Lanarkshire but this versatility could entice a Premiership rival to make a move for the 29-year-old. There are very few better options available on a free.

Andy Halliday - Rangers

Halliday joined Rangers in 2015 and while he clearly loves playing for the club he supports, gametime has become increasingly limited for the 28-year-old at Ibrox.

Comfortable in midfield or at left-back, Halliday is another who would be an ambitious target for a Premiership side but if Rangers decide against extending his deal and he ends up on the lookout for a new club, he could prove to be an excellent addition for most top-flight sides.
