Leigh Griffiths is set to return to the Celtic squad for Saturday’s lunchtime game against Hamilton Accies.

The Celtic striker has not played since the 6-0 win over St Johnstone at the beginning of October, after which he withdrew from the Scotland squad as he cited as lack of match fitness.

Injury and illness have curtailed his involvement for both club and country but the 28-year-old has resumed full training with Brendan Rodgers preparing to add him to the squad for the game against Accies.

“He is a possibility to be in the squad,” said the Hoops boss. “He has only really joined training the last seven or eight days, so we will have to see.

“An astroturf pitch is no ideal for calves either but he is moving well again.”

The game is expected to come too soon for Celtic captain Scott Brown but there is an alleviation of the injury issues at the Parkhead club with Nir Bitton back since being sidelined with a knee injury in July.

“Browny is back training, Griffiths is back training,” said Rodgers. “Olivier Ntcham is back, which is good. Nir is back and that’s great news for us because he has been out a long time.

“t’s going to take a bit of time to get up to speed.

“Jozo Simunovic is still with the medical team and young Mikey Johnston is still injured as is Marvin Compper. Apart from that it’s looking healthier...”

And Rodgers has reiterated that the form of Callum McGregor means that there is no reason to rush Brown back into the team.

“He has been brilliant in there,” enthused the Celtic manager. “He is a different profile of player. He allows you to change the speed of the game and makes the game look so simple.

“The key to Callum when you watch him is, ‘touch, pass.’

“Stick anyone else in there and they need four or five passes before they decide what they are doing. So it has worked quite well with the balance.

“When you watched him with Scotland the balance was good with two number eights running and controlling the game from behind. But I can say that about Callum when I ask him to play left-back. Or when he comes inside to midfield, whatever you ask he does it.

“He is a real valuable player.”
