Celtic last night agreed a deadline day loan deal for Borussia Dortmund right-back Jeremy Toljan.

The 24-year-old is expected to fly into Glasgow today to finalise details of the move but it is understood that he will remain with Brendan Rodgers’ side until the end of the season.

Toljan trained with Dortmund yesterday morning before agreeing a late switch to Celtic after a contingent from the Parkhead club had been in Germany sealing the move.

It is understood there was some interest from Napoli too in Toljan, but the player has made the decision to head to Glasgow in the search of regular game time. The German under-21 internationalist can also deputise at left-back.

Toljan made his breakthrough at Hoffenheim before joining Dortmund in 2017 in a £6m deal. The 24-year-old, who has played for Germany at every youth level, has struggled for game time this season since the arrival of Lucien Favre.

“This is an exciting move for me and I’m delighted to be joining a club like Celtic, which has a great reputation throughout Europe," he said last night on the club's website.

“I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and working with the manager, and I’ll be doing everything I can to help the team to be successful in the remainder of this season.”

Celtic have already made several signings in January with Timothy Weah and Oliver Burke joining Rodgers' squad on loan early in the window, while Vakoun Issouf Bayo was signed on a permanent deal.

Youssouf Mulumbu headed back to Rugby Park on loan last night until the end of the season after making just three appearances for Celtic. Mulumbu signed for the Parkhead side on the final day of the summer window but has not been able to make an impact.

Celtic also announced that captain Scott Brown had signed a two-year extension to his deal yesterday afternoon, a move the formally kills off any interest from A-League newcomers Western Melbourne.

The Parkhead side completed the signing of Maryan Shved, who will return to Ukraine on loan, while American duo Manny Perez and Andrew Gutman signed 3.5 year deals with Celtic.

Perez has represented USA at Under-20 level and has been named Player of the Year in the USA Soccer Development Academy, while Gutman is the most recent recipient of the Hermann Trophy in America.

Both players will continue their development through loan moves back in the USA, with Perez going to Nashville and Gutman to North Carolina.

Shved will also return to his club, Karpaty Lviv, but the 21-year-old winger was delighted to become the first Ukrainian to join the Parkhead club.

"Playing games over the next few months is going to be huge for me so I can come here with confidence," he said. “I’m very proud to be here and even prouder as a Ukrainian to be the first player from my country to sign for Celtic, particularly with what that means for football in Ukraine.

“So I’m going to do my absolute best to be an example for Ukrainian footballers and open up a door for them.”

Shved returned to Karpaty in 2017 after a year with Sevilla's B team and scored eight goals in 18 appearances this season.

Karpaty sit eighth in the Ukrainian Premier League before the 12-team league splits into two - the top half competing for the title and the bottom half to avoid relegation.

"This stage of the season is also important for Karpaty Lviv, because they're fighting in the league, so they'll need me now more than ever and there's a personal weight on my shoulders to really perform.”
