CAMILLA HATTERSLEY admits she never believed herself capable of making it to the Olympic Games and insists she can continue racking up personal bests in the build-up to Rio.

The 21-year-old City of Glasgow Swim Team member qualified after a hugely impressive British Swimming Championships at Tollcross International Swimming Centre earlier this month.

Hattersley took home silver in the 800m freestyle, finishing just behind world medallist and Commonwealth champion Jazz Carlin. The University of Glasgow student also reached the finals in the 200m and 400m freestyle, setting a number of personal records in the process.

Her time in the 200m freestyle ensured her place for the Rio Olympic Games, where she will now be hoping to be part of the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay team.

“I am extremely proud to be selected to represent my country at an Olympic Games,” she said. “I don’t think it has quite sunk in yet. This has been a lifelong dream of mine and one which I never thought I would actually achieve.

“The Olympic Trials were what I have been working towards for so long and I’m so happy that everything I have done has paid off and that I was able to produce lifetime bests when it mattered the most.

“Now though the preparation for the Games begins and I’m going to do everything I can in order to give my best ever performances in Rio. I have an exciting few months ahead of me.”

Ian Wright, High Performance Coach at the City of Glasgow Swim Team, believes Hattersley’s rise to prominence has set the bar for everyone within his team.

“This is, obviously, fantastic news for Camilla, but will also be of great benefit to our whole programme,” said Wright. “It will show all our young swimmers what can be achieved with hard work and be an inspiration for their own development.

“We always knew Camilla had a chance, but it was a long shot and required her to improve significantly.

“At the trials, she showed great character to step up and do just that. It will now be an even more exciting few months ahead and Camilla's preparations for Rio begin straight away.”

Camilla, who was a finalist in the 800m freestyle event at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, is joined by former City of Glasgow swimmer Robbie Renwick and fellow Scots Ross Murdoch, Hannah Miley, Craig Benson, Stephen Milne, Dan Wallace and Duncan Scott in Team GB for Rio 2016.

Her inclusion in the squad comes exactly comes four years after she carried the Olympic Torch for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
