Team Scotland are within touching distance of their medal target with another handful of silverware added overnight.

Following swimmer Duncan Scott’s history-making gold medal in the 100m freestyle yesterday, which saw him take his individual tally for the Games to five, Scotland’s added another handful of medals overnight to go to fifth on the medal table with an incredible 25 medals on just the fifth day of action. The previous best at an overseas Games was 29 medals, won at Melbourne 2006, but it seems only a matter of time before that total is surpassed.

In the lawn bowls, Paul Foster and Alex Marshall were defending champions in the pairs and they faced Wales in the final as they bid to retain their title. However, the Scots could not get their hands on another gold medal, losing out 12-10 in an incredibly close final to win silver.

And the Scots continued to put in strong performances in the preliminary rounds of the other disciplines with the women’s pairs, the para-bowls B2/B3 pairs and Darren Burnett in the men’s singles all recording victories.

The men’s gymnastics team has made quite a mark at the Games so far and that continued overnight, with Frank Baines winning bronze in the parallel bars competition to add to the bronze medal the Scots won in the team event.

The athletics competition has kicked-off and following Mark Dry’s bronze medal in the hammer yesterday, Scottish athletes gave themselves further opportunity for silverware with both Allan Smith and David Smith clearing 2 metres 21cm in the high jump competition to secure their place in Wednesday’s final.

Aberdeen’s Zoey Clark continued her fantastic year, which has already seen her win a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay at the World Indoor Athletics Championships, as she moved into the semi-finals of the 400m at the Carrara Stadium in Gold Coast, which will be run tomorrow.

And Steph Twell moved into tomorrow’s final of the 1500m following a tough battle in the heats. With less than one hundred metres to go, half a dozen runners were fighting for four automatic qualification spots but the Scot benefitted from a fall from a rival in the home straight to grab the fourth and final automatic qualification place.

The McIntosh name is well-known within shooting circles, and the youngest of the clan, Seonaid McIntosh, made a stellar start to her Gold Coast campaign, finishing in fifth position in the 10m Air Rifle final. She has further opportunity for silverware as the week progresses though, with the 50m rifle events still to come.

The women’s hockey team continued their quest to become Scotland’s first-ever medallists in a team event by thrashing Ghana 5-0, which provides the perfect preparation for their next match, in which they take on hosts Australia.

In the boxing competition, in which Scotland has a proud tradition of winning at least one medal at every edition of the Commonwealth Games, John Docherty moved to just one match away from a medal, defeating Andreas Kokkinos of Cyprus to reach the quarter-finals of the middleweight division.
