Pittman delivered a star performance in his side’s 1-1 draw at Pittodrie at the weekend, underlining for McInnes that he was right to monitor the player’s progress this season.

The 26-year-old midfielder stepped up from junior football with Bo’ness United to Livi in 2015 when they were in the Championship and helped drive them to promotion last summer.

It’s understood Aberdeen are keen to persuade the player to join when his contract with Gary Holt’s team ends at the close of the season.

Meanwhile, Joe Lewis admitted he was relieved ground hadn’t been lost on rivals Rangers and Kilmarnock, who drew at Ibrox on Saturday, because of the result at Pittodrie.

But he was concerned at the defensive lapses which allowed Livingston to snatch a point as Aberdeen try to figure-out why their home form – one win in their last nine in the Granite City – has been lacking.

“It was another frustrating one,” he said. “I didn’t think we played badly. I thought we were going to win the game but it’s another goal we’re really disappointed with.

“You have to work hard in these type of games to get ahead and we did that with a good goal.

“When you get ahead in these games, you need to take advantage of that and we conceded a poor goal which allowed them a foothold in the game.

The second half, we had to work hard to try and get the lead again but we couldn’t manage it.

“It’s pleasing that we didn’t lose any points on Rangers and Killie, but it was an excellent opportunity to make those two points up. It’s one less game than we can do that now.

“There’s a lot of work to do. The lads will get a bit of a rest and make sure any niggles and injuries are sorted and make sure we can attack that last set of games.

“I think this international break comes at a good time during the season. Some of the earlier ones came too frequently.

“We can’t help that but it’s slow to get the season going sometimes and build some momentum.”
