JEMMA Reekie took a page out of her training partner Laura Muir’s book as she completed a golden double yesterday at the European Under-23 Championships in Gavle, Sweden. Already an imperious winner of the 800m on Saturday, the 21-year-old made it a historic double when he took to the front after a slow first two laps of yesterday’s 1500m final and kicked for home in a time of 4.22.81.

Making light of a hectic schedule of four races in four days, she became the first British athlete ever to win a double gold at these championships and the first Scottish women to win gold here since Allison Curbishley back in 1997. Indeed, as Reekie remains Under-20 champion for another week or so, it was also pointed out yesterday that Reekie and Muir, who train together at the Emirates Arena under the auspices of Andy Young, currently hold every European 1500m title going, the outdoor, indoor, Under-23 and Under-20 crowns.

“I don’t think it has hit me yet,” said Reekie. “I am really tired, my legs are sore and the girls did not make that easy for me in both final. So I am really pleased to get two golds.

“I just wanted it so bad; I know I said coming here that I would be happy with two medals but there was only one colour I wanted in both and I am really pleased I got it right.

“It has been amazing here, an amazing experience and an amazing team. I can’t thank British Athletics enough for all their support, not just here, but throughout the year so far. Yesterday I had to try and stay calm [on the podium] and not get too excited but now I can celebrate and I can’t wait to go home and see my family.”
