GREG DOCHERTY hopes his form with Rangers will allow him to realise his Scotland ambitions – with the Under-21 squad.

The midfielder has made an impressive start to life at Ibrox after making the move from Hamilton during the January transfer window.

He has quickly become an integral part of the Light Blues squad and helped Graeme Murty’s side to a fifth successive win as they beat St Johnstone on Tuesday night.

Boss Murty has tipped Docherty to make a push for a place in the national setup under the guidance of Alex McLeish in the coming months.

But the 21-year-old is taking it one step at a time as he looks to go from strength to strength for club and country this season.

He said: “I hope [I can be a mainstay in the Rangers team] but I will take each game as it comes.

“You see the bench is so strong and the squad is so strong, there are guys not even on the bench that are experienced players. I am learning from these guys every single day and it is brilliant for me, it is priceless.

“I don’t know [how close a Scotland call-up is] and I am not thinking about that at the moment to be honest. If it comes it comes.

“My aim is to get in the Under-21s team. I didn’t play the last couple of games there so I would like to be involved more.

“It has always been a dream to get to the A squad but I am taking each game as it comes with Rangers. I want consistency playing for Rangers first and then I will look further on.”
