JERMAIN DEFOE reckons he is getting fitter and sharper all the time as he looks to get up to speed for Rangers as quickly as possible this term.

The striker scored on his debut against Kilmarnock last week and then came off the bench the win over Livingston on Sunday.

He couldn’t find the net at Cowdenbeath but got 90 minutes under his belt as the Gers progressed to the Scottish Cup fifth round.

Defoe said: “Yeah, it is good. Obviously it is important for me to get games and day by day I am feeling sharper and a lot fitter and I am enjoying it.

“The lads have been brilliant, the fans are great and we just need to keep winning football matches.

“I have come to an environment where everyone is flying, the team is confident and playing well. So it is keep winning and we will be happy.

“I just want to take each day as it comes, I don’t want to put too much pressure on the lads.

“But, like I said before, the lads have done so well before I came here.

“At the beginning of the season, you want to be in that mix of the teams at the top of the league and if we can achieve something special it would be great for everyone.

“We just keep taking it each day as it comes and, like I mentioned before, keep winning football matches, which is the most important thing, and we will see what happens.”

Rangers overcame Cowdenbeath with relative ease on Wednesday night as they set up a clash with Kilmarnock in the next round.

Strikes from Andy Halliday, Lassana Coulibaly and Kyle Lafferty were enough for the Light Blues as they ran out 3-1 winners.

Defoe said: “It is always going to be difficult. It doesn’t matter about the opposition, you have got to be professional and approach it like any other game.

“Of course, we wanted to come here and put in a performance. The conditions were difficult but, at the same time, it was the same for both teams.

“We are delighted with the win. We will take that.”
