BORNA BARISIC reckons Rangers can prove their Premiership title credentials by overcoming rivals Aberdeen on Wednesday night.

The Light Blues make the trip to Pittodrie two points ahead of the Dons and three in front of Kilmarnock after their 4-0 weekend win over St Mirren.

But it is league leaders Celtic that Steven Gerrard's side are focused on as they look to mount a challenge for the top flight silverware in the second half of the season.

Rangers are at Rugby Park on Scottish Cup duty on Saturday and Barisisc knows it could be a defining double-header for Gerrard and his players.

He said: "It's a big seven days for us. Aberdeen in midweek and Kilmarnock in the Cup. But we are full of confidence after this win.

“We will go to Aberdeen and try to win. This week can be a very important week for us.

"I am always positive, I always want to win. If I didn't think we could win the title, I wouldn't play football. I hope we can do it and get to the final.

"If we are to become champions then we need to go to places like Aberdeen and win. We need to win.

"If we win at Aberdeen and at Kilmarnock, I think that would set us up very well for the rest of the season. I think it would give us a great deal of mental belief.

"Aberdeen are a tough team, they have good players and they have proved that because we haven't managed to beat them on three occasions. But there has to be a first time for everything so why not on Wednesday.

"There is a rivalry between us and Aberdeen - it's like Celtic almost. I think that will push us on at Wednesday.

"I missed all three matches against Aberdeen. I really enjoy big games and the big rivalries."

James Tavernier netted twice from the spot and Jermain Defoe also converted from 12 yards to overcome the Saints on Saturday.

Ryan Kent completed the scoring with a neat finish late on as Rangers ran out comfortable winners from an eye-catching encounter.

Barisic said: "I can't say it was our best performance, but when you are in a title race like we are the most important thing is to get the three points. At the end it was 4-0, we created more chance than them and now we go to play a very important game at Aberdeen.

"The standards are high at a club like this. The crowd always want us to play good football, but sometimes you can't manage that all the day.

“Days like today for example where we were not at top level. But big teams win even when they don’t play well, so I think the important thing for us was to get the win."
