RANGERS will already be searching for the striker that will replace Alfredo Morelos and the only question is when he moves on and we need that player to come in.

There has been a lot of talk about how much Alfredo is worth in the transfer market and Stewart Robertson suggested this week that Rangers will look at the Moussa Dembele fee when he left Celtic and use that as a reference when teams come in during the summer.

I know supporters would be upset if Morelos moved on, and I am sure Steven Gerrard would love to keep him long-term. But the model is to find players at a certain price bracket, develop them and sell them.

Of course you don’t want keep losing your best players but the funds from Morelos moving on will allow Steven to strengthen the squad once again and that search will be well underway.

If you lose a player like Morelos, you need to replace him. That won’t be easy, but that is the challenge and someone – whether it a free, a loan or a fee – will come in.

If the feeling from Alfredo and his representatives is that he wants to move on, that is fine. Rangers then have to be prepared for that in terms of a replacement and then ensure they get the right money for him.

Rangers fans are quite right to look at what Dembele moved to Lyon for in the summer and expect Morelos to command a similar fee.

He will surpass the number of goals that Dembele scored, so if he went for £20million then why shouldn’t Morelos?

Anyone that can score goals is worth so much to a team. People will look at Alfredo’s disciplinary record, but the positives far outweigh the negatives with him.

If he is missing a handful of games in a season but still scoring as many goals as he is, then what could he do if he doesn’t pick up the silly suspensions that keep him out?

I think you have to be thinking in that ballpark when it comes to a fee and I know Rangers certainly won’t just take the first offer that comes in and sell him on the cheap.

People will say that Alfredo is only playing in Scotland and he can’t be worth money like that, but Celtic have done great business with Dembele, Virgil van Dijk, Fraser Forster and Victor Wanyama, and that shows that clubs will pay for players from our league.

Morelos is a natural goal scorer so there is no reason why he can’t be worth north of £15million and people will always go that bit further to sign a striker that could make all the difference to their season.

At 22-years-old, you are buying potential as much as what he can do in the here and now. He could easily have another ten years in him no problem and there will always be a premium on players like him because he is a match winner.

Players that keep the ball out the net and players that put the ball in the net are worth their weight in gold to teams and Rangers have certainly got a gem in Alfredo.

Whether Morelos goes down south or he goes abroad, he will want to play at the highest level he can right now and take his career to the next stage.

Rangers won’t want to stand in his way, but they will only sell when it suits them and the most important thing now is to make sure Rangers finish the season strongly.

If Alfredo can score towards 35 goals and help Rangers win a bit of silverware, then that benefits the club and it raises interest and the asking price once again.

Whenever he moves on, he certainly won’t be short of options.
