The bodies of two women were discovered at a flat in Glasgow’s east end yesterday afternoon.

Police said the deaths at Dalserf Court are being treated as unexplained but are “not at this time thought to be suspicious”.

One line of enquiry police are following is that they may have died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Nearby properties were evacuated after the alarm was raised around midday yesterday.

Neighbours were seen standing in the street as police officers and forensic teams went in and out of the building near Gallowgate.

Two women wearing white protective suits could be seen working through the window of the ground floor flat, which is owned by West of Scotland Housing Association.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were also at the scene for a short time, as well as staff from the National Gas Emergency Service.

Alan McKinlay, 75, who lives in the next building, said: “They came in to check the gas after it happened. They had a machine and held it up in the middle of the room. They also had a look at the boiler but a new one was only put in a couple of months ago.”

Another neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: “All the West of Scotland tenants got new boilers recently.”

Eileen MacDonald, an official from the housing association, arrived at the Dalserf Court two hours after the emergency services.

She confirmed that the property where the woman died is owned by West of Scotland but declined to comment on the incident.

Chief Executive of the housing association, Lynne Donnelly, later issued a statement which said: “West of Scotland Housing Association is aware of the incident at our property at Dalserf Court and our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those involved.

“As this is an ongoing police investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further until the investigation is complete.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Around 1200 hours, Sunday 24 April 2016, police and emergency services discovered the bodies of two women within a property in Dalserf Court, Gallowgate, Glasgow.

“They are yet to be formally identified. Their death is currently being treated as unexplained, however, are not at this time thought to be suspicious.

“A post mortem will be conducted in due course to establish the cause of death and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

“One line of enquiry is that their death may be related to carbon monoxide poisoning, although this has still to be confirmed.”

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that staff attended a “police incident” but declined to comment further.
