A MAN has died in hospital after injuring himself with knives in Glasgow city centre.

Police said an assault took place shortly after 4pm and the suspect then headed to West Nile Street where he "inflicted serious injuries upon himself".

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the man, who had an axe under his arm, injuring himself in the neck with two Stanley knives.

The man died in the Royal Infirmary a short time later.

Police described the incident as "contained and isolated." No one else is wanted in connection with it.

A force statement said: “Officers attended and the incident was very quickly contained. The man was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he died a short time later.”
