HEAVY snowfall is affecting morning rush-hour traffic on several busy motorways.

Traffic Scotland is urging motorists to “drive safe” as a number of routes  - including A720, A702, A68, A7, M77 and the M8 - are all affected.

Those on the M8 Westbound at junctions 3a and 3 were being told to expect delays as a road accident slowed down traffic with lane 2 blocked, which was later cleared.

Surface water has also been building up on many routes, including the Kingston Bridge, with Traffic Scotland advising caution on every road in Glasgow City Centre.

Additional resources, crews and gritters have been dispatched to the worst-hit areas, including the M77.

The advice comes amid a yellow “be aware” weather warning for rain and snow across Glasgow and its surrounding areas until 9pm tonight.

The Met Office said: “Scattered snow showers will affect Scotland during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

“A spell of persistent rain and hill snow is expected to develop through Tuesday morning across southern Scotland, extending into the north in the afternoon and evening.

“Delays to travel and public transport could occur from snow on higher ground.

“Spray and flooding on low level roads will probably make journey times longer.”
