THESE images show the scale of the destruction left behind from the devastating fire that brought the top of Glasgow City Centre to a complete standstill on Thursday.

Photos taken by the Evening Times show the extent of the damage to the block as the shops below - including Greaves Sports, Greggs, Specsavers - lay bare, mounds of debris strewn outside, with all windows completely shattered.

The presence of smoke is still evident; pouring water onto the building from above, plumes of smoke have been pouring out from Victoria’s Nightclub below where unconfirmed reports suggest the blaze started.

Police remain at the scene with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS).

A number of road closures and diversions remain in place for both drivers and pedestrians until further notice and the public is being asked to avoid the area if possible.

A joint investigation is ongoing to establish the cause of the fire. However, police have confirmed it is not believed to be suspicious, although the building remains difficult to access due to damage.

“We continue to work with partners with regards to those businesses in the area which are affected. Please continue to follow the relevant social media accounts in order to receive updates,” Police Scotland said in a statement.

The emergency services have also thanked “everyone” for their support and assistance, particularly the local businesses and the Salvation Army which has been providing hot food and refreshments to emergency services at the scene.

Firefighters said they will remain at the scene for “as long as it takes.”

The SFRS said a lot of work is still to be done to ensure the fire is completely extinguished.
