BLOCKED drains are flooding a busy shopping street in Glasgow's East End - causing misery for residents who live in the area.

There are around 20 drains along Tollcross road from Wellshot Road to Killin Street which have reached their capacity - and the pavements and roads surrounding them flood during rainfall.

The issue has been ongoing for several months - and one resident fears that someone could be hurt if they walk on roads to avoid flooded pavements.

Ian Brown, who walks Tollcross Road with his dogs everyday, said: "It is having an effect on people walking along the street. You have to walk on to the road or walk half way up a street cross the road and come back down to carry on.

"It is not good for children or people in wheelchairs, women with prams or the elderly.

"It is quite dangerous if people are getting forced onto the road."

The 54-year-old, from Sandyhills, said he has complained to the council in a bid to get the issue tackled.

He said: "It is a lack of service, someone is not doing their job by cleaning the drain. You think they would make more of an effort to clean it."

Councillor Thomas Kerr said the issue is one which effects several areas of the East End and he has called upon the local authority's Land and Environmental Services to tackle it.

He said: "The issues affecting Tollcross Road have got more and more serious over the years of neglect the council have given to them which has led to the stage we are in where flooding is happening every time the rain starts, that’s not on. "

He added: "As the local councillor I have raised this issue with Land and Environmental Services within the council and I am still waiting on a formal response back. I would also add that the drainage issue is not reserved only for Tollcross, this is a problem which affects areas all over my ward and the East End in general.

"With the minority administration setting aside money to deal with our roads and pavements at the last budget I'm cautiously optimistic that the money can be found to tackle this issue and as an opposition councillor I'll use my position to push council officers and the SNP administration to listen to local people and the East Ends voice which has been neglected for far too long."

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: “There is an ongoing programme of works to clean the road gullies including those in Tollcross Road, which were last cleaned in December 2017.

“The drainage on Tollcross Road suffers from poor capacity issues and in periods of prolonged or intense wet weather flooding can occur for short periods.”
