More than half a million pounds worth of litter fines were issued in Glasgow over ten months.

Litter officers patrolling the streets have given out 7473 fines in ten months from April last year to January this year.

At £80 a time to avoid prosecution the total means the city handed out almost £600,000 worth of fines in ten months

Most of the fines were issued in the city centre with the City, Anderston and Yorkhill council ward which was responsible for 5026 of the fixed penalty notices.

The council issued ten times more fines for dropping litter than for dog fouling, with 789 fines given to owners.

Council Environmental Task force officers also responded to more than 9000 reports of fly tipping across the city.

The city wide teams removed more than 6000 cases of graffiti covering 50,000 metres.

The Environmental task force has increased the number of Neighbourhood Involvement Volunteers across Glasgow reporting examples and helping with clean ups.

It now has 750 volunteers who have carried out 84,000 hours of work.

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council ,said: “A fall of 21% in complaints about litter is testament to the hard work of staff on the Environmental Taskforce and in our cleansing teams.

“Huge praise is also due to our fantastic army of Neighbourhood Improvement Volunteers (NIVS) who take great pride in their neighbourhoods.

“These dedicated residents give up their time to take part in community clean ups and environmental enhancement in their own areas – supported by the Taskforce.

“If everyone was as passionate about their communities and disposed of their waste responsibly, litter and fly-tipping would be less of a problem.”
