FOODIES in Glasgow have a bit longer to wait for the eagerly awaited opening of celeb hangout The Ivy.

The restaurant was scheduled to open this year on Buchanan Street, at the site of the Nationwide bank, which is transferring elsewhere in the city.

However, the date has now been pushed back to 2019. It is understood The Ivy will get the keys to the building in late Summer and begin fitting out the building.

The original Ivy in Covent Garden, which opened a century ago, was the haunt of household names like Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, Marlene Dietrich, John Gielgud and Noel Coward.

More recent diners include Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Madonna and David and Victoria Beckham.

Plans have been approved to convert the Buchanan Street building currently occupied by the Nationwide Building Society into a branch of the famous brasserie creating 150 new jobs.

A spokeswoman for The Ivy said: "The only information we have been given is that the opening has been pushed back to 2019."

The Ivy on the Square opened in Edinburgh in the Autumn last year.

A spokeswoman for Nationwide said: "We will be moving our Buchanan Street branch and our overflow appointment-only branch (Hope Street) to our new bigger and better flagship branch in Argyle Street.

"As yet we do not have firm timings on when service will transfer from Buchanan Street/Hope Street to Argyle Street we will announce this nearer the time however we anticipate it to be late summer."
