BARS across Glasgow are gearing up to celebrate the third annual World Buckfast Day - and a popular café is getting in on the action too.

Buckfast cakes will hit the menu at Singl-end’s Garnethill and Merchant City branches on Saturday, May 12.

Celebrated the second Saturday of every May across the globe, World Buckfast Day was established in 2015.

The team at the drink’s fan club Wreck the Hoose Juice came up with the idea of creating a day to honour the popular wine.

“We were simply fans who wanted to spread the word to all other Buckateers across the globe, drink Bucky and enjoy yourself,” organisers said.

Buckfast brownies and Buckfast red velvet cake will be sure to go down a storm with sweet-toothed Weegies this weekend.

This isn’t the first time the Singl-end team has taken inspiration from booze for their treats.

In the past, the chain has offered up gin and tonic loaf, rum and raisin caramel brownies and boozy bourbon baklava.

General manager of the Garnethill branch, Maddie, described how, as a Glasgow University student, she “enjoyed a glass of tonic wine every now and then.”

“They don’t call me Maddie for nothing!” she laughed.

Maddie continued: “I love the concoctions they come up with in the kitchen. It’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed a glass of the tonic, so I can’t wait to try a brownie this weekend.”

Garnethill’s head baker Chiara Tieraccini added: “Because of its high sugar content, Buckfast actually has a very sweet, jammy flavour that makes it great for baking with.”

Tamzin Young, general manager at Merchant City, said: “David, our head baker, was really excited to be able to work with Buckfast.

“We’ve created some great bakes inspired by our favourite drinks in the past. My favourite was the gin and tonic loaf.

“I don’t know what it is about making cakes with alcohol. The flavours are always really interesting and the customers love it.

“Buckfast icing on a red velvet cake is a new one. I can’t wait to try it.”
