GLADBACH goal star Lars Stindl cursed his side's missed chances as Celtic held them on Tuesday night.

The 28-year-old German was the best player in black as he rocketed his team into the lead at Borussia Park, only for Moussa Dembele to cancel his effort out in the closing stages.

Stindl acknowledged that his side were forced to hang on as a result of that goal and the red card for Julian Korb that came with the penalty award, but he was far from pleased that the Champions League Group C tie was not put to bed by that stage.

"I was too far away from the incident to give a fair assessment," he said of the spot kick award on 75 minutes. "Celtic played a ball through to their striker and we were a bit slow to react. That can happen in football.

"But it should never have got to that scenario in the first place, if we had taken the chances we had earlier on in the game."

The draw, coupled with Manchester City's shock win over Barcelona at the Etihad, means Monchengladbach's chances of making the last 16 of the Champions League took a severe hit.

It was a fact not lost on Stindl, who has called for a reaction from his team-mates as they try and regroup.

"Obviously we were desperate to win the game," he said. "We had a couple of tricky periods in the first-half, but still went into the lead.

"We then changed things around a little bit and started to play a lot better. We created several chances to score, including André Hahn hitting the bar.

"Had we put ourselves 2-0 up at that stage, then I think we would have wrapped up the game. Yet we unfortunately conceded a penalty and also went a man down through the red card to Julian Korb. Playing with ten men made life a lot harder and so we had to settle for the point in the end."

The former Hannover forward added: "It was important that we picked up this point, so that we could still hold an advantage over Celtic for third place in the group.

"We knew right from the outset that being in a group with two Champions League contenders, in Manchester City and Barcelona, would make it extremely difficult to qualify for the knockout stages.

"Our goal was therefore to make sure we were in some form of European competition after the group stages. We knew very well that we would be in a fight with Celtic to secure third place in the group. We will now do everything we can to defend our third place position in the group."
