Brendan Rodgers believes that Celtic have taken another step on their journey towards being a Champions League level team with the manner of their display against Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday night.

Celtic left Germany with a point after Moussa Dembele’s penalty restored parity in the game but it was the belief in their second half performance that encouraged Rodgers.

“Ware trying to build and create a team that can come to Europe both at home and away from home and be a real threat, yet play with composure and bravery on the ball,” said Rodgers.

“I said to them afterwards, it’s much better to play like that than sit in, camp in and defend for what seems like two days. I want the team to come and have the confidence and belief to dominate, create chances and play with aggression. I felt they did that last night.

“We should have won the game but the night was really positive for Scottish football and for Celtic in particular. We have played against A top side in these back-to-back games and this time we were the better team.

“We were second best at home but I felt we showed a marvellous response to that. To come away, which is new for a lot these players, and to have that courage to play, to build the game and to create opportunities was very good to see.

“Hopefully, we can continue to build on this. The competition for us was about improvement and you can see that in the team from the last game.”

Celtic will play Barcelona at Celtic Park after the impending international break before concluding their Group C fixtures with a trip to the Etihad against Manchester City.

And Rodgers believes that Celtic have absorbed some of the lessons from the Champions League already this season.

“When you perform like that away from home, it gives you huge confidence and it puts us into the final games in the competition with great motivation to get a result and that’s what we will look to do,” he said.

“Those first few games against the top sides have been a real test for us but last night you saw the confidence and our ability to build the game from behind; stay calm, get in good positions, take the ball under pressure, pass the ball and move off the ball, and it’s a much more enjoyable game to play.”
