HE is the joker in the pack that Rangers fans could take to their hearts, the self-titled class clown that is serious about scoring goals.

The man the Ibrox crowd loved to hate when he was in the green and white of Hibernian is now living the dream as he prepares to pull on the blue jersey for the first time.

For Jason Cummings, it will be a moment to savour rather than fear. He won’t be daunted by the challenge nor fazed by the occasion against Aberdeen.

This is the striker, after all, that said he ‘opened a tin of beans’ when describing a goal against Hamilton and reckoned he had the ‘touch of an angel’ at Ibrox. Last season, he became ‘Cumdog’ as he grappled with wrestling star Grado at the Hibernian training ground.

Cummings may not have hit the heights or seen his name in lights at Nottingham Forest but he has all the attributes – physically, technically and mentally – to shine in Light Blue this season.

"It does take a certain character to play for a Rangers or a Celtic even,” Cummings said. “It takes a different character, I think.

“But I feel I have that character to play for Rangers. I just cannot wait to get started, honestly.

"I think I'll embrace it, that's the best word. I'll embrace it. I'm just going to embrace the full six months, really.

"We'll see what happens after that. But I just want to enjoy my time here and then see what happens.

"I'm still a Forest player so I'll need to speak to them at the end of the six months and take it from there."

Cummings has been joined at Ibrox this month by Sean Goss, Jamie Murphy and Russell Martin but it is the fourth man through the door that has captured the imagination of supporters.

The 22-year-old scored eight goals in 11 appearances against the Light Blues as he made the most of his chances to impress when it mattered most at Hibs. He is in the ideal place to bring out the best in him once again.

"That's my character,” Cummings said. “I do come alive when there's more pressure and in bigger games and atmospheres. I feel that reflects my personality in these bigger games.

“And that was another reason for coming to Rangers because every game is going to hostile and they are all big games and the atmosphere will be huge so I think I fit that character to be a Rangers player."

Cummings could be handed his bow by Graeme Murty when Aberdeen make the trip to Ibrox this evening and Rangers return to action following the winter break.

A debut goal would be a dream start but the forward is just looking forward to getting back on the park in more familiar surroundings.

"Scottish fitba? To be honest I've just missed playing games,” Cummings said. “I've been down there and not played enough games as I feel I should be playing.

"That's the main thing I've missed. I've missed the bigger games too.

“At Hibs I enjoyed playing against Hearts and Rangers in front of the big crowds. I've just missed playing fitba."

A record of four goals in 17 appearances for Forest wasn’t what Cummings had hoped for when he moved south of the border to link-up with Mark Warburton in the summer.

He lasted a couple of weeks longer at the City Ground than the former Ibrox boss before he was sacked and replaced by Aitor Karanka. Now, he is back in Scotland and back in the spotlight.

"Do you know what, you might be surprised but I actually enjoyed being under the radar a bit,” Cummings said. “I had a good time at Forest.

"It's obviously not as intense down there so I could walk down to the shops and it was sound. I actually enjoyed that, being a bit under the radar.

"Well, I maybe did miss it a wee bit... That's why I'm back, I suppose."

Cummings was no stranger to the headlines during his time at Easter Road and his move to Ibrox gives him ample opportunity to dominate the agenda and the back pages once again.

Images of Sandy from ‘Grease’ and his dog, Carlos, are just two of the tattoos that Cummings has had done. It is the grin of ‘The Joker’ that is inked on his hand that he hopes to show off as often as possible, though.

“I just like to score in every game,” he said. “My target is to get at least one goal in every game and then see what happens.

“I don’t normally put a target on the season because you never know what can happen. Just every game, I want a goal.

“I got a new tattoo so hopefully you might see it [tonight]. The smile is just to tell everyone not to take life too seriously and just smile. Hopefully, you can see it every week.”

The move to Ibrox is the start of another chapter in Cummings’ career but the excitement has been shared with his nearest and dearest.

His dad, David, expressed his delight at the deal on Twitter last week and the Edinburgh-born striker is now realising a lifetime ambition in Light Blue.

Cummings said: "My old man was buzzing with all the new followers and likes he got with that. I think he'd had a few beers that night too - don't drink and Tweet.

“He's ecstatic for me to play for Rangers. Most of family and friends are Rangers and Hearts fans, they've always been on that side.

“So a few mates that didn't speak to me when I was at Hibs have started to message me again and ask what's been happening. It's just football.

"I went to a few Rangers games when I was younger. I was at more Hearts game though and I was a Hearts fan when I was growing up. I can't really remember too many games as a fan."
