Odsonne Edouard’s season is expected to be over after the striker limped out of Tynecastle yesterday afternoon with a suspected hamstring injury.

The news will be a blow for Celtic and for the 20-year-old striker ahead of the William Hill Scottish Cup final in less than a fortnight.

Edouard has risen to prominence in the latter half of the season but it is doubtful now if he will be seen before the curtain comes down on Celtic’s season.

The Parkhead side are keen on signing the striker on a permanent deal from PSG after an impressive loan spell this term but Brendan Rodgers has revealed that his season appears to be concluded prematurely.

“It looked like a hamstring so we’ll need to assess it,” said the Celtic manager.

“It would be a real shame if he was ruled out. He’s been brilliant for us as he’s developed and improved.

“If it’s a hamstring it would end his season. Odsonne’s injury meant we had to take Moussa [Dembele] off as a precaution.

“Once you get past that 65 minute mark it runs a higher risk, especially with him just coming back and prone to the odd hamstring as well.”

Meanhwhile, Rodgers has poured scorn on Hearts for gamesmanship tactics that he felt were designed to stop Celtic playing. The Hoops boss labelled the Tynecastle pitch “embarrassing” and believes that the inability to pass on the longer grass was prohibitive to both teams playing football.

“I’m a little bit embarrassed because of the pitch,” said Rodgers.

“You talk about standards and this is a great club, Hearts. A really passionate club.

“But I felt for both sets of players. You saw it early on when the ball got thrown out and it actually sticks on the grass it was that long.

“UEFA have a standard and Bobby Madden will tell you from all the countries that he referees in is that the grass has to be of a certain standard. This is not just to suit us, I’m talking in general.

“Stevie Naismith has played a lot of his life in the Premier League and their players have tried to play and can’t pass the ball!

“From a football perspective I was disappointed. It’s the first time in my life I’ve said to a team of mine that to play from the back is a huge risk. Why? Because the ball is going to stick.

“I said, ‘listen, we’ll need to play direct as we can’t build the game.’

“We dominated the game, but from a football point of view and for spectators that wasn’t football. Craig says what length do you want grass?

“There’s a standard. They can probably have the pipes fixed for next time too so the grass can be watered.

“I heard the pipes were broken when we asked for water.

“This is about the product of Scottish football – not just about Celtic. I’m talking about youngsters and gifted players in their team who can’t dribble or pass it because of the grass.

“If that’s what you want to do then fine but – it’s not football.

“Of course it’s gamesmanship but that’s 30 years ago, Christ.

“You haven’t qualified for 20 odd years and we’re trying to develop players and a product here to move the game on.

“Brilliant win for us given that we had to play a totally foreign game. But how the players dealt with it I was impressed.”

His opposite number, Craig Levein, said: “There wasn’t enough grass the last time. If they tell me exactly how much they want, we’ll try to get it right next time. Listen, I’m not interested in that.”
