FIREFIGHTERS are still on the scene of a massive fire in Greenock more than 14 hours on.

The Evening Times reported on Thursday how dozens of fire crew members rushed to the town’s Jamaica Street at around 5pm.

Well-developed flames could be seen billowing from the top of a building on the street.

Around 10 appliances rushed to the scene.

Fire crews remained at the building through the night into this morning to try and put out the fire.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “Fire crews remain at the scene where they are undertaking a dampening down operation.”

Police Scotland has also advised motorists of road closures in the area.

The force said: “Road closures remain around Jamaica Street in Greenock. Please follow diversions or find an alternative route. Follow @GreenockPolice on Twitter for further updates.”
