A SECURITY guard was attacked with an axe by a gang of thugs during an east robbery.

The Evening Times understands a G4S security guard was exiting the RBS bank at The Forge shopping centre when two men ran towards him with an axe.

Eye witnesses said the man was carrying a box when he was attacked.

It's not yet known if the guard was injured, however, the duo then made off with a box being carried by the security worker.

An eye witness told the Evening Times: “By all accounts they didn’t rob the bank, just made away with a box.

"The security boy was taking it inside and they came at him with an axe, group of them.

"He dropped the box and they were away with it. Then they were gone.”

The men are understood to have ran towards a vehicle before making off.

Three men were later seen emerging from a vehicle which was set alight in Carntyne shortly after the incident.

Police have not confirmed whether the incidents are related or how much was taken in the raid.
