A 37-year-old man has died following a fire at a high-rise building in Knightswood on Tuesday morning.

Emergency services were called at 5.50 am on Tuesday to reports of a fire at the multi-storey block on Kirkton Avenue.

One man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he later died, Police Scotland have now confirmed.

A Police spokesman said: "The fire is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

It is the fourth fire to break out in the multi-storey building in less than two years.

Visible smoke damage could be seen above one of the windows on the tenth floor of the south side of the building, but residents told The Evening Times the fire broke out on the sixth or seventh floor.

Resident Caroline Baldwin has lived in the building for 18 years and lives on the 12th floor.

She told the Evening Times there have been two fires in the building over the past 18 months and spoke of her worries after 72 people died in a huge tower block fire in west London in June 2017.

She added: “We had the heads of GHA out to us the first time, after what happened in London [Grenfell], assuring everyone the buildings won’t go up.

“The cladding is different from the one in London, but really we don’t know what’s happening."

The fire at the 24 storey building was confined to one flat, according to Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) who own the building.

A GHA spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the man who has died.

"We are continuing to talk with residents in the block, offering information, advice and reassurance about all the measures we have in place to help keep them safe."

The last fire in the building occurred on December 30 2018 when 23 fire fighters battled to put out a blaze that broke out in a flat.

One person was taken to hospital after the fire broke out around 3.40am.

In January 2018 fire crews were called to the building at 6.17am after a bed reportedly caught fire.

Two casualties were treated at the scene and one was taken to hospital.

In June 2017, days after the Grenfell Tower disaster, another fire broke out at the high-rise in Knightswood.

Fifteen residents were evacuated and a 27-year-old man was treated for concussion at the scene.

GHA said as part of their Stay Safe campaign they had a 94 per cent increase in their home fire safety visits last year.

They have encouraged residents who are yet to have a home fire safety visit to contact them.
