RESIDENTS have voiced concerns about a new housing development for the South Side.

As previously told in the Evening Times, Southside Housing Association has applied for permission to build 49 homes in Strathbungo.

But locals claim the development will cause parking headaches in what is already a congested area.

The former Arnold Clark Garage on Allison Street, just along from St Bride's Primary School, has been earmarked by Southside HA for one, two and three-bedroom flats.

There will be 26 parking spaces in front of the west side of the building, which will be for public use, and include eight disabled parking spaces.

The housing association describes the plans as a "car-free development" - meaning there are no parking spaces incorporated into the site.

Residents believe that having nearly 50 new homes will place a burden on parking in the area.

Shawlands & Strathbungo Community Council last week held a public meeting about the development, which saw 40 local residents attend as well as Southside HA, AS Homes, Geo. Buchanan architects and Councillor Soriya Siddique.

A spokeswoman for the community council said: "The main issue with the development is that of concerns about increased traffic and parking problems.

"There were also issues about the height and design of the building in relation to residential amenity in the area."

Southside HA also held a session for the public, a consultation workshop with the site's architects on Monday in South Seeds on Victoria Road, but said no one turned up.

Patrick Mc Grath, Director of Southside HA, said: "Southside HA recognises concerns about parking and we are happy to work with the council and the community to look at sensible solutions but our priority would be for those who are wheelchair users to have spaces."

The community council is now calling on residents to comment on the planning application, Ref No. 19/00712/FUL, at the council's planning portal online or by email to planning.representations@glasgow.gov.uk

Representatives said residents who are not online can collect hard copies of the drawings for the plans at their next meeting tomorrow at 7pm in Destiny Church on Pollokshaws Road.

The community council also has a guide to making planning comments, which they can send out to anyone who emails shawlandstrathbungocc@gmail.com
