A HISTORIC West End building could be getting a facelift after applying to the council to extend it.

Bosses at Kelvingrove Café, on Argyle Street, in Finnieston, want to improve the dining experience for their customers as well as make some changes to the kitchen area for staff.

The venue also wants to make changes to the business’ facade in line with its historic look.

The Category C-listed building first opened its doors in 1896 as a lunch spot for visitors to the nearby Kelvingrove Park.

Over its 122 years, the converted ice-cream parlour has had many different faces but, in 2013, it was taken back to its Victorian roots as a contemporary “European grand café.”

A planning application submitted to the council states that bosses want to reconfigure and improve the existing cafe inside the existing listed building which sits within a conservation area.

The aim would be to allow for an “improved design experience” for customers as well as an upgraded kitchen for staff.

The plans state: “Non-historic rear outhouse reconfigured to locate the kitchen in the basement, with a raised floor deck to improve headroom in a basement area.

“Upper floor to form improved dining space, with vaulted ceiling and rooflights.

“South facing fixed window proposed for outhouse gable elevation.”

The team has indicated a willingness to renew the shopfront in a historic style, with proposals outlining plans to carry out improvements to the shop front in line with the conservation area’s context.

The shopfront would be replaced with a reinstatement of the previous historic entrance position.

The plans are currently under consideration.

The Evening Times has contacted the venue for comment.
