A GLASGOW restaurant launched by one of the first Asian families in Dennistoun has been recognised as one of the best South Asian eateries in the UK.

The Nakodar Grill was a finalist in the Tiffin Cup, a prestigious competition to find the best South Asian restaurant in the UK.

The restaurant, which is based in an 18th century townhouse, was nominated by Glasgow North East MP MP Paul Sweeney and made it to the last 13 in a list of 70 after a rigorous selection process that involved TV chef Ainsley Harriott.

The restaurant focusses on fresh and natural ingredients and food is cooked in a bespoke tandoori oven, one of only two of its kind in Scotland.

Mr Sweeney said highlighted the restaurant's success in the House of Commons saying: "It is not just about the quality of food, which was ably judged by a team chaired by Ainsley Harriott, but the great contribution that these restaurants have made to local communities.

"Tony and Johnnie Ginda, who come from one of the first Asian families in Dennistoun, established that restaurant.

"Many thought it would fail, but they fought against all the odds to make it a huge asset to the community. 

"They do amazing community work as well as all the work they do to provide fine cuisine in Glasgow. I invite everyone to try it out if they are ever in Glasgow."

Nakodar which means 'gate of goodness' is a city and a municipal council in Jalandhar district in the Indian state of Punjab.
