A search has been launched after a cat was found abandoned in a plastic carrier last week.

The Scottish SPCA was alerted to the feline, who is thought to be around one or two years old, after a member of the public came across the carrier on August 6.

It is not known how long the little black and white cat spent alone in the carrier, which was found in Motherwell, but animal carers are urging the public to help find the person responsible.

Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006, and anyone found guilty could be banned from keeping animals for life.

Scottish SPCA Lanarkshire Rescue and Rehoming Centre manager Peter Fleming said: “This little cat is lucky she was discovered by a vigilant member of the public.

“We are unsure how long she had been left for and we are keen to find the person responsible for abandoning her in this deliberate way.

“We think she is around one to two years old and thankfully doesn’t appear to have any signs of injury. She is currently being cared for by the staff at our centre in Lanarkshire.
