Celtic have thrown their support behind club captain Scott Brown after he was subjected to vile abuse following Sunday's Old Firm match.

A taunt about his sister's death was directed towards him outside Ibrox as a number of supporters gathered waiting for players to appear.

As Brown made his way to Celtic’s team bus after the game, a supporter shouted: "How’s your sister?".

The jibe was a reference to Mr Brown’s younger sister Fiona who passed away at the age of 21 from skin cancer in 2008.

Old Firm legends and fans alike have united to rally round Brown, with Celtic FC also showing their support for the iconic midfielder.

The club shared a picture of Brown celebrating Sunday's Ibrox win with manager Neil Lennon with the caption: "Captain. Leader. Legend. 💚 @ScottBrown8".

Paddy McCourt, Simon Donnelly, Chris Sutton and Moussa Dembele are just some of the players to send their support to the star.

Dembele shared the vile clip on his social media saying: "Disgusting, it's just football. Be strong captain as usual."

Paddy McCourt added: "Disgusting behaviour. In my opinion, you have to be bad to the core to try and emotionally hurt another person by using the personal grief that they’ve suffered in the past as a weapon. Take football out of it whoever shouted that is a horrible human being."

Meanwhile, Rangers legend Nacho Novo expressed his anger over the video, with ex-Gers star Kevin Thomson also throwing his support behind Brown.

He wrote on Twitter: "Love football to bits it’s been my life, but seeing that video of someone saying that to Scotty made me sick, love the rivalry love the battle, so many amazing fans who respect what the club represent, no place ever for pricks like that. Brilliant seeing so many disgusted by it."

Rangers say the person responsible for the abuse will be banned for life from Ibrox.
