Locals in East Kilbride have described their horror after a shooting left two people in hospital.

Emergency services, including armed officers, were called to the Gordon Drive area of Calderwood just after 11pm last night.

This morning forensic teams remain in the area, with Gordon Drive, Calderwood Road and Laurenstone Terrace all cordoned off.

Shattered glass is scattered across the road inside one of the cordons.

Now, locals have described their terror at seeing armed cops and police dogs swarming the street.

One woman, who asked not to be named, said: "I heard a sound like someone shutting a door really loudly, like a car door.

"I remember thinking, 'Who's that out there hammering on that door?'

"But I was watching a film so I didn't get up to look.

"When I did get up and looked out the window just before midnight the place was swarming with armed police.

"There were sniffer dogs, ambulance, armed officers."

She added: "It's really quite scary when you see armed police.

"This is a really quiet street, it's so, so quiet.

"You don't get any issues on this street at all.

"Social media is going crazy today, talking about it being a drugs thing.

"It's really quite a shock."

Police confirmed this morning that the incident was a shooting, and two men are currently in hospital for treatment.

A second neighbour, who asked to be known only as Jane, said: "I got home from work last night and the police were already here with the road taped off.

"It's a real shock.

"This is quite a quiet wee bit and we never have any trouble.

"Nothing like this has happened before."

One man, who gave his name as Bill, said his neighbours were usually very quiet and there was not much coming and going at the flat.

Like other residents, he described the noise as like "a door slamming."

He said: "I didn't think much of it.

"It was like a door slamming shut but it never crossed my mind it would be gunfire.

"I also only heard the noise once."

Bill continued: "Next thing there's armed police outside and ambulances.

"There's never been anything like this here at all, it's a very quiet street.

"You know people to say hello to and most people are very friendly.

"I've heard talk of being drugs related but I find it hard to believe.

"Though it's also hard to believe there could be a shooting and that's now happened."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland added: "Around 11.05pm on Tuesday 10 September 2019, police received a report of an incident in the Gordon Drive area of Calderwood, East Kilbride.

"Two people have been taken to hospital.

"Officers remain at the scene and enquiries, which are at an early stage, are ongoing."
